Preh Reverser Lever Beeps in Forward or Reverse — John Deere 6000/6010/7010 Series
Applies to: 6000, 6010, and 7010 series tractors with a left-hand reverser lever. Verified models: 6110, 6110SE, 6200, 6210, 6210SE, 6300, 6310, 6310SE, 6400, 6410, 6410S, 6410SE, 6500, 6510, 6510SE, 6610, 6610SE, 6810, 6910, 6910S, 7210, 7410, 7510, 7610, 7710, 7810.
What you'll see
Someone replaced the old Pollak left-hand reverser lever with the newer Preh replacement — part AL165301 on 6010 series, AL165303 on 7010 series. Now a beeper inside the lever goes off any time the lever is pushed into forward or reverse. Move it back to neutral, the beeping stops.
The tractor itself is fine. It drives, it works, nothing else acts up. It's just the beeping.
Why it does that
The two levers hold themselves in gear in completely different ways, and nobody changed the wiring to match.
The old Pollak lever used a magnet to hold itself in gear. The tractor's computer sent it about 8.75 volts, and that magnet is what kept the lever from flopping back to neutral.
The new Preh lever doesn't use a magnet at all — it's held in place mechanically, by a detent you can feel with your hand. But there's a small circuit inside it that still watches the wire the old magnet used to run on, and it expects to see a full 12 volts when the lever is out of neutral. The tractor is still sending the old 8.75 volts. The lever reads that as something being wrong and starts beeping.
So the lever isn't broken and neither is the tractor. The lever is just getting the wrong voltage.
Check this first
Before you touch any wiring, plug in and read the trouble codes.
If there are any active codes, or if anything about the tractor is running wrong, stop. You've got a different problem, and doing this fix will just hide symptoms you need to see. Only do this repair when the beeping is the only thing wrong.
The fix
The idea is simple: give that lever a full 12 volts instead of the 8.75 it's getting now.
- Find the X201 connector and get to the tractor side of it (the harness side, not the lever side).
- Locate pin F. Trace the wire going into it — it'll be wire 688 on a 6010 series, wire 678 on a 7010.
- Disconnect that wire from pin F. Tape the loose end and tie it back so it can't touch anything or rub through later.
- Run a new wire from the ACC post on the key switch over to pin F.
That's it. The lever now sees 12 volts whenever the key is on, and the beeping stops.
Shop notes (Green Spring additions — not part of the original factory guidance)
Since the new wire comes off ACC, it's only live when the key is on, so it won't drain the battery sitting overnight.
Put an inline fuse on the new wire, sized to whatever gauge you run. Route it in loom alongside the existing harness and secure both ends so it isn't hanging loose — it's going to live through the same mud, vibration, and pressure washing as everything else under there.
